Milk Thistle
Silybum marianum
The seed of this Mediterranean thistle contains silymarin — a complex of flavonolignans that is lipophilic and integrates directly into liver cell membranes. Silymarin protects hepatocytes through membrane stabilization, elevates glutathione to support Phase II detoxification, stimulates hepatocyte regeneration, and inhibits bacterial beta-glucuronidase in the gut — protecting the liver's packaged excretion products from being reabsorbed before they can leave the body. It is working at two points in the same clearance pathway simultaneously.
