Getting Berberine Out of the Plant and Into the Body
There are two stages to understand — and each one matters. Berberine is poorly soluble in both water and fat at room temperature. This affects both how you extract it from the plant and how the body absorbs it.
The most researched mechanism of berberine is its activation of AMPK — adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase. AMPK is sometimes called the body's metabolic master switch. When it is active, it signals the body to use stored energy — burning fat rather than storing it. It supports how muscles and the liver take up glucose from the bloodstream, and it reduces the processes that create new fat or sugar. Berberine activates AMPK. Which means it is not directly telling the body to burn fat — it is restoring the signaling that allows the body to do what it is already designed to do.
