The Immune System
The immune system is your body's defense network — a coordinated constellation of cells, organs, and proteins that recognizes and neutralizes threats (pathogens, toxins, damaged cells) before they can cause harm. It operates through two complementary strategies: rapid innate responses and targeted adaptive immunity.
Two Layers of Defense
The immune system is organized into innate immunity (the rapid, nonspecific first responders) and adaptive immunity (the specialized, learning system). Both work in concert. Innate immunity acts within minutes to hours; adaptive immunity develops over days but remembers past threats.
Key organs include the bone marrow (where immune cells are made), thymus gland (where T cells mature), lymph nodes (where immune surveillance happens), spleen (filters blood and coordinates immune response), and lymphatic vessels (transport immune cells and collect pathogens for processing).
How Immune Defense Works
When the immune system detects a threat (bacteria, virus, damaged cell, foreign antigen), innate immune cells like macrophages engulf and destroy the pathogen while simultaneously releasing pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1). These chemical signals alert other immune cells to mobilize, increase capillary permeability to allow immune cell extravasation (movement into tissue), and activate adaptive immunity.
The adaptive system then generates antigen-specific T cells and B cells, producing antibodies that tag pathogens for destruction. Once the threat is cleared, regulatory T cells dampen the inflammatory response to prevent tissue damage and restore balance.
